How are my paint skillz?

I use Paint.net, a free download program, extremely good for photo manipulation and creation. Usually I mostly use it for photo manipulation, which with the tools it has, I am quite good at. But I also want to be good at picture creation, and so I tried to make something earlier today. The background is a bit iffy, should have used flame tool as well as clouds I think.

Well one of the biggest things that helps me is just to get some images, and screw around with all of the funtiions and various effects that paint.net has to offer, so I can get a better grip and knowlege of using them. And go to the paint.net forums and download the custom effects packs. The cutsom made functions are pretty good.

What did you do for that? A pre used image that you altered? What were your steps?

For mine:
1) Use the paint tool to make a solid blue oval.
2) Use effect Add Noise to make it have dots.
3) Use smudge effect to make it swirl outwards. You can see that in the image.
4) Added layer2
5) In layer2 I put eyes and mouth, worked them around, cut out the shapes where they would go in layer1, where the main body would be. Then I used bevel on the eyes to make them pop out like they are 3d. And feather on the eyes to make them blend into the creature.
6) Feather on the mouth to make it blend into the body and bevel on the teeth to make them pop out 3d.
7) Sharpen effect to the max, I really like sharpen.
8) Mettalize on the whole thing, makes it really different colors that is the final product in the picture.

9) The background was just another layer I used the cloud effect on and cutout the shape for the creature to go in. Then I merged layers, and whala.

Alot of the effects I used were custom ones. Go to one of the tabs in paint.net and get to the forums, custom plugins. The new stuff is great.

Hey people. I considered making a new thread but this one is already the main point of what I want to show. I just completely made this, my own desktop background, in paint.net. Its awesome. Check it.

noise for stars? and nice planet. but if you want a real better one, I suggest using shape 3d, it makes it 3d looking. Really effin good.
