I don't care, it's a happier way to live.

And they do work, he just didn't plan for the pychology of motivations. Rewards are better than punishments, but for most the rewards (winning) probably seemed out of reach. He needed a punishment.

Had he started the tournament with a TEAM concept, one person cannot suddenly quit without screwing his partner. The purpose of the tourney is to get activity, not just entries. Using teams would probably have the same number of entries, but greater content per, and mor activity.
