The My Little Pony Franchise is undoubtedly for little girls, but this specific iteration is not. The show's creator, Lauren Faust (creator of the Powerpuff Girls), has said so herself.

Absolutely. The time Spike fell asleep in a punch bowl, they made a joke, saying that the punch had been "spiked". That is definitely not a joke for little girls. They also mentioned zombies once, which I also don't think was intended for little girls.

There is no reason to announce that you are leaving permanently and have no intention of coming back. You can always stop by once in a blue moon. Just because you aren't going to be active doesn't mean you can't come back.
